Ashes by Ilsa J. Bick

Alex's life pretty much sucked after getting a brain tumor. Alex didn't need any more freaking sympathy. So in a twisted way, she was almost glad when the electromagnetic pulse flashed across the horizon and caused all electronic devises to go haywire.
Originally, Alex went to the National Park to say goodbye to her dead parents and her own personal demons. But the EMP ruined that fantasy. Now she's running though the forest, avoiding people that were more effected by the Zap than her *cough* cannibals *cough*, and trying to take care of not only herself, but an annoying 9 year old girl named Ellie. It was more than tough in Alex's opinion, considering that the EMP turned certain people into something that drained the humanity out of them.
